What is sustainability?

Sustainability is a key principle of all decisions and actions in our company. This ranges from ecological issues such as climate and environmental protection, energy efficiency and circular economy to social aspects such as respect for human rights, health protection, social commitment and sustainable corporate governance.

Sustainability Strategy: where it all starts

Responsible and sustainable action is firmly anchored in our code of values. It states: „We are shaping a better, safer and more sustainable future.“ Our Sustainability strategy is an integral part of the overall Group strategy and influences all future decisions. greentec steel is our flagship project in terms of sustainability, but by no means the only one. We are aware of our responsibility towards our environment, society and therefore the future of all of us.

Sustainability initiatives to which we are committed

  • We are one of the first steel companies in the world whose production has been successfully certified according to the 12 principles of ResponsibleSteel. Our site in Linz fulfills all 200 criteria of the global certification initiative - such as the responsible procurement of raw materials, the reduction of CO2 emissions and the handling of employee and human rights.

  • This United Nations initiative is committed to an inclusive and sustainable economy. For us it is a matter of course to participate in the UN Global Compact with its ten principles - and has been doing so for more than a decade.

    • Principle 1: Protect and respect internationally proclaimed human rights within your sphere of influence
    • Principle 2: Ensure that we are not complicit in human rights abuses
    • Principle 3: Uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining
    • Principle 4: Elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor
    • Principle 5: Abolition of child labor
    • Principle 6: Elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation
    • Principle 7: A precautionary approach to environmental challenges
    • Principle 8: Promote greater environmental responsibility through initiatives

  • We have been a member of the worldsteel Sustainability Charter since 2022 - as one of 40 steel-producing companies. All participating companies have committed to the following nine principles of sustainable steel production:

Opportunities and specific fields of action

As a globally active, leading steel and technology group, we are aware of our economic, ecological and social responsibility. To achieve this, we are going one step ahead and setting ourselves ambitious goals in the major issues of the future.

UN SDGs

With the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations has set itself the ambitious goal of promoting sustainable development worldwide. The 190 member states want to achieve 17 specific goals by 2030, and we as a company are actively involved in this effort. Our sustainability initiatives contribute to 12 of the 17 SDGs.

With Austria's largest climate protection program, greentec steel, the transition to climate-friendly steel production is becoming a reality. Our clear goal is to produce steel with net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, for which we will be investing EUR 1.5 billion in the coming years.

Circular economy

The careful use of existing resources is an important area for the future. We are using even more of our own scrap for steel production, extending product life through processing and recycling, promoting renewable energy sources and focusing on greater energy efficiency.

Research & Development

Achieving our ambitious sustainability and corporate goals requires intensive research. Continuous further development is the key to success, which is why we have continuously increased our expenditure on this in recent years.
